STOPPARD COMEDY “HEROES” NEXT AT ITC

The Illinois Theatre Center of Park Forest continues its 36th season with the comedy HEROES by Tom Stoppard.  The production opens Friday, October 28 for a three week run.

HEROES is Stoppard’s adaptation of the French play “Le Vent des Peupliers” (The Wind in the Poplars).  Set in 1959, it is the story of three elderly veterans of the First World War who are living out their golden years in a retirement hospital in the French countryside.  Tired of reminiscing about their glory days and complaining about the “sadistic nuns” who run the place, they make plans for one last great adventure.

Tom Stoppard was born in Czechoslovakia in 1937.  His family emigrated to England to flee Nazi occupation.  Since the mid-1960’s he’s been one of the most prominent playwrights in the English language. He has won the Tony Award for Best Play four times - for ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD (1966), TRAVESTIES (1974), THE REAL THING (1982), and THE COAST OF UTOPIA (2002).  Mr. Stoppard won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for “Shakespeare in Love” in 1998.  In 2008, he was named #76 on Time Magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world.  He was knighted in 1997.

The Illinois Theatre Center cast features          Jack Hickey, Michael LaGue, and David Perkovich, who also directs.  Mr. Hickey returns to ITC after a 30 year absence – he appeared in PLAY IT AGAIN SAM in 1981.  Since then he has gone on to become Artistic Director of the Oak Park Festival Theatre, where he has appeared in and directed dozens of productions.  He has also appeared with ShawChicago, Drury Lane, The Goodman, and many others

Michael LaGue is making his ITC debut.  He has appeared at theatres across the country, including Milwaukee Rep, Nebraska Shakespeare Festival, American Players Theatre, Missouri Rep, Kentucky Shakespeare Festival, North Carolina Shakespeare Festival and others.

David Perkovich has appeared in and/or directed dozens of productions at ITC over the past 33 years.  His other Chicago credits include The Goodman, Drury Lane, Chicago Shakespeare, Marriott Lincolnshire, Candlelight Dinner Playhouse, Light Opera Works, Theatre at the Center, and his own theatre company, Interplay.

HEROES runs from Friday, October 28 to Sunday, November 13.  Performances are Wednesday through Saturday at 8 PM, and Sundays at 2:30 & 7:30 PM.  Tickets are priced at $22 on Fri. & Sat., $20 at all other times.  The Illinois Theatre Center is located in Downtown Park Forest at 371 Artists Walk (off Indianwood Blvd., next to Village Hall).   For more information, call 708-481-3510.
